Twitter’s introduction of a 280-character limit may not have received the best response, but people are using it. I’m glad it’s here to stay. It is going to boost connection and reach, I hope. This new limit will expand Twitter’s microblog style and leave some annoying elements behind. Like comprehension, for one.

rushing riverI was talking with a couple of friends recently about the “Twitter Twelve.” This is one of my tricks to balance social media consumption and sharing with productivity in offline work.

It is so easy to fall into the river of Twitter. You sign in and see surge after surge of information go by, pieces lumped together with hashtags, clogging up (trending!) things here and there, creating masses of information on the same topic. It is easy to get lost for an hour or more, following tags and trends. Read more

I am crazy about Instagram. It’s my first-thing in the morning, last thing at night channel. Before tea or coffee even, it’s Instagram. I love connecting beyond words with the views of people all over the world.  I think I get a feel for some people through their captions, others use few captions so it’s just about the photos. Some I might sense through their profiles, others are so whimsical it’s hard to tell.

This is part of what I love about Instagram: a lot of it is poetry. It’s like a net. There are strings of words, but it’s really about what you see through them.   Read more

It’s been a busy week. I haven’t been on Twitter much, because sometimes you just have to let it go. When I did hop onto Feedly here and there, I was glad to see these pieces on health communications.

What pulls all of these pieces together for me is their health literacy element. Simply defined, health literacy is the ability to understand health information so you can make informed choices. Life isn’t that simple though- health information might not always be health information; it could be advertising in disguise. Readers need to be aware what kind of information they’re reading. All hail Ann Douglas’ How To Avoid Being Psychologically Destroyed By Your Newsfeed, a great read to save your soul and sanity. I’m a communicator, I should be communicating, but I am burying myself in work that doesn’t require I be up and into the hyperspace speed of Twitter because I too am feeling overwhelmed with the news of the world. Douglas offers practical (stick to your usual routines) and powerful (look for opportunities to take action) ways we can all aim for balance, and I was glad to see I’m on track. #BellLetsTalk Campaign for Mental Health

Today is Bell Let’s Talk day, a campaign that has four initiatives, one of which is recognizing the importance of destigmatizing mental health challenges. The campaign started in 2010 and Olympian Clara Hughes has been speaking up and out throughout its years. She has been open about her life with depression. Other celebrities have added their voices to the campaign along the way, including Mary Walsh, Howie Mandel, Serena Ryder and Michel Mpambara. Read more

Power Hashtag Feeds Fundraising Campaign

I’m fond of well used hashtags, so I like this one: #BeingHungrySucks.  It’s a tag, it’s a statement, and it’s a campaign driven by A Better Life Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds towards food security (a significant social determinant of health) as well as provide job training and employment opportunities. Programs serve Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, a trauma ridden neighbourhood that’s also rich in community and heart. Read more

Twitter Tip: Hold That Hashtag

I’ve managed several work-related brands and my own Twitter stream for seven years, so I’m not a newbie to wading through the rapid fire of tweets and hashtags. I use both TweetDeck and Hootsuite for management and have multiple streams on the go when I check in, so lots of information moves across my screen.  (Note I didn’t say screens. I’m not using two monitors, so you communicators out there who are, hats off and my sympathies.)

The other day I bumped up against a tweet that was entirely hashtags. I say bumped up against, as not one word stood out on its own and the tweet was a mess. It was a tangle of tags, one of which, ironically, was #communications. Read more
